the Garmin Edge 7045 is a truly amazing peice of kit and dead easy to get up and running. the graphs it creates from any training ride is an invaluable source of feedback. seemingly weatherproof - so far! Thought it a bit of a rip-off having to pay an extra 30quid for the maps.

I bought this to track my rides and keep a record of routes that I could reuse when I was out on my own. So far Im really impressed, battery life is very good, it has only dropped reception in a very long tunnel and then it calculated to compensate. The amount of customising is impressive both with personal data like heart rate zones but also the visual display.I lack confidence with the mount, it seems less robust than my front light and doesnt have a nice solid 'click' when the unit is mounted. I feel the need to check its not going to fall off now and then. A sharp knock would see it off Im sure. As others have said the included instructions are dire, I have been using the garmin training centre videos as they are much more comprehensive.I have never used a sat nav on the bike before and if it were not for some very helpful web sites (nothing to do wih Garmin) I would be none the wiser now as the instructions for use are flimsy to say the least. I am still getting to grips with how to map routes and import them so I can put audax rides on it...havent got there with that yet.I bought a map to add straight out of the box so I cant comment on the base map but the NT europe one is good for me so far, I have no idea how to add open source maps eg cycle maps - need to do more research, garmin no help.This is a great bit of kit but you need to be calm and patient to get it set up properly, or get someone who knows what they are doing to show you!

So, no, it's not perfect. For starters, it's mind-bogglingly expensive, and the base map is exactly as useless as everyone here says it is. Other annoyances are that the manual is equally terrible, and that Garmin Training Centre is not the most attractive UI in the world.However, it's easy enough to install a new base map - and you don't have to buy a Garmin one. I use a free opensource map which works just fine. The manual may be rubbish, but a quick google around will reveal a wealth of blogs and features that should help you get the most out of your device, and while Training Centre isn't the best looking interface in the world, it's actually pretty useful. GarminConnect is handy for sharing rides/courses, too.The unit itself feels solid and well made. It's about the size of my mobile phone (Sony Ericsson C903), but a bit thicker. The screen is big and clear and while it's pretty basic compared to a phone or car sat-nav, it remains readable on the move, and keeping it simple undoubtedly contributes to the impressive battery life.Asking the 705 itself to navigate me to a central London cinema was not a particularly good experience - it directed me to non-existent "alleys" and "tracks" and coming home, kept insisting I perform a U-turn while heading very much in the right direction on a legitimate road about half a mile from my house.However, that's not really what I bought it for, and planning and uploading courses into the unit produces much more satisfactory results. The training information is extensive - it picks up the HRM and cadence sensor automatically - and while the calorie counter is notoriously unreliable, that's not something that bothers me.So overall, I'd say as long as you shop around (Amazon price is currently good), choose an additional map to suit your needs, and do a bit of reading around, you'll find that this is a great product with a lot to offer. Just don't leave it on your bike when you stop for a cuppa...
